Frankincense (Olibanum) Oil Boswellia spp.
Several types of olibanum are traded but the most common is the the Boswelia carterii. This oleoresin, which is collected by making incisions into the bark, comes out as a white, sticky, milky substance that solidifies into small, golden drops. Coming from north-east Africa, the tapping of the olibanum trees is part of tribal ritual. Frankincense, mainly used in the manufacture of incense, is also a good fixative for fragrances.
