Addressing Adulteration in Aroma Ingredients with Transparency and Integrity

🌱 This Earth Day, we're taking a moment to reflect on the integrity of the materials we work with—and the impact of their origin and authenticity on both people and planet.

Recently, we asked our community:
 "How much of an issue is the adulteration of essential oils and aroma chemicals for your company/business?"
 ➡️ A striking 67% said it was a major issue.

Managing Director Henry Gill shared his insight on the matter:

“Adulteration of aroma ingredients is not a new problem. Whenever there is an opportunity for financial gain, there can be the motivation to adulterate a product by adding cheaper materials… There is a strong likelihood that just about every essential oil, plant extract or natural aroma chemical is a candidate for some form of adulteration.”

It’s not just about profit margins—it’s about trust, transparency, and sustainability. The reality is complex. From mislabeled ingredients to regulatory inconsistencies across global markets, the risk is widespread.

Gill continued, “We’ve seen it all—from Mentha arvensis in M. piperita, to synthetic menthol labeled as natural. Even the distinction between 'US natural' and 'EU natural' causes confusion and opens doors to misrepresentation.”
